| This glue has been used for professional veneering since 1940 and is still the industry standard for making plywood and waterproof woodworking joints. It is mostly used for veneering and is a dry urea formaldehyde powder resin to be mixed with water to activate the catalyst, also in the powder. It can be mixed by volume- 3 parts resin to 1 part water, or by weight- 2 resin to 1 water. Mix by preparing the water in a container, then pouring the dry powder all at once, wait 10 seconds, and stir mixture until resin is clump free. One cup of dry resin will cover about 10 sq.ft. You can alter the color of the glue by mixing universal tints to darken the glue or by mixing both the dark and white dry urea resin to obtain the correct shade between white and dark brown. The white dry urea resin is ideal for gluing lighter woods such as Maple or Satinwood. The temperature of the project should stay above 70 degrees F. For colder environments, use an electric heating blanket over the project during the press curing cycle. At 75 degrees, the open face time is 25 minutes, unclamp in 6 hours complete cure after 24 hours. At 85 degrees, and the open time is 15 minutes and unclamp in 3 hours. Shelf life for this glue is one year, and can be extended by storing in a cool, dry place. Do not use the glue if the resin powder is ‘crunchy’ or clumping in its original container. A small amount of glue will bleed through the veneer while pressing, but will not affect the finishing when it is sanded off. Allow the project to air out and cure 24 hours before scuff sanding or removing the gum tape. |
